Wizard: Ride 9

October 3, 2008

Eggbutt Snaffle

Tuesday, Sept 30. It’s not him, it’s me. After seeing Sarah getting Wizard to totally relax and go quietly (Ride 8), I now know that I need to work on relaxing. I’m transmitting my energy to him and it’s making him a little tense. He walks fine, but he breaks into a jig from time to time.

I intend to re-evaluate my saddle fit and have an equine chiropractor take a look at him, just to be sure that he is as comfortable as he can be. And in the meantime, I need to RELAX and be sure that my signals are not confusing him.

The hardest thing for me is to relax. I’m getting better, but I always have to think about not gripping with my legs constantly. Sophie seems to like it better when I do, but with Jessie, he would slow down as soon as I stopped gripping.

Just found your blog from FHOTD (and cried at your last day with Alibar). Thanks for sharing your story–and his–it was incredibly moving. I hope when I get there with my two, I can do it with as much strength and dignity as you did.

This post hit the mark with me now, though, as I have an OTTB named Calabar and he has been the best teacher in terms of my mental/physical state affecting our riding. We have a long way to go, but I wouldn’t trade him for anything.

Great blog, thanks for sharing with the rest of us.
