Spotlight: Meadow Creek Farm

October 14, 2008

October Sky

On Saturday, I went to Meadow Creek Farm for a photo session. What a lovely farm! The arena, barn, and paddocks were all beautifully maintained. And the horses and owners were fun. I took advantage of the strong October sunlight. The light was intense but the position of the sun changes so quickly at this time of year- we had to move fast every time we set up a new shot.

Here’s Cutsie. She’s a smart, well-trained 20 year old Paint mare. She stood like a pro for her photos- no halter, no bridle. Her right eye is part brown, part blue:

And she can RUN!

Go, Cutsie, Go!

Here’s the handsome 6YO QH named Jet. He was so nice to work with until we turned him loose for his liberty photos… then he was jet-propelled!

See Jet run!

Jet at sunset- I’ve been practicing my silhouettes quite a bit lately and the big horizon at the farm was perfect for sunset silhouettes.

Flying Mane

And this is Angel- she is really sweet and very bonded to her owner. She has the cutest blonde eyelashes and a really cool blaze.

The Bond Between Horse and Human

Next weekend, I’ll be at the Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase. A few days later, I’ll be on my way to California for the Breeders’ Cup!

Do you mind giving some tips on taking equine photos? My husband has taken photography up as a hobby, but movement shots still come out a bit blurry. He has a Canon 10D with a 75-200mm lens. He’s practiced on kids, cats and dogs as well as some horses we had thought of purchasing.

Now that we have Casey (Watch Cowboy Zip), I’d love to be able to get some decent shots.

Also, I think I’m going to add you to my blogroll!

Thanks so much for the comments!

I’d be happy to take a look at the photos and give you some pointers. Are they posted online anywhere?

I will have to post some and start a flikr account for them. I will post here when I have.

Our main issue is blurry leg syndrome.

Sounds great! Looking forward to it. Blurry legs usually mean that your shutter speed is too slow.

I made a flickr account just for this! I’ve tied it to the front page of my blog, way at the bottom.

Soon, I will get rid of those from the flickr account and only have nice photos.

Btw, the photo of my Casey in today’s blog post was taken with my little Nikon, not so great camera when we were goofing around. He’s awfully wiggly!
