Breeders’ Cup: The Jersey Girl Heads West…

October 20, 2008

Ginger Punch wins her second consecutive G1 Go For Wand at Saratoga

I’m off to California for Breeders’ Cup coverage! I’ll be shooting races and distributing the Thoroughbred Daily News.

Peter Vegso is the publisher of The Ultimate Horse Lover- I’m the lead photographer and also a contributing writer. It will be released on November 1. He owns Go Between. If Go Between wins the Classic, check the winners circle for Mr Vegso, yours truly, Gina Spadafori, and Arnold Schwarzenegger (trophy presenter).

McDynamo: The Champ is Back…

October 18, 2008

McDynamo is McDynamite!

On October 18, 2008, the Breeders’ Cup Grand National Steeplechase will be run in Far Hills, NJ. 5-time winner McDynamo will be there, but not to race. He was retired last year and his retirement ceremony will take place before the race- he is a fox hunter in PA now. Last year’s win was one of the most exciting horse races I’ve seen in my life- I had tears in my eyes as he and Jody Petty streaked across the wire. I look forward to seeing all of the races tomorrow, but the Champ is the main attraction for me. Long live McDynamo!

Spotlight: Meadow Creek Farm

October 14, 2008

October Sky

On Saturday, I went to Meadow Creek Farm for a photo session. What a lovely farm! The arena, barn, and paddocks were all beautifully maintained. And the horses and owners were fun. I took advantage of the strong October sunlight. The light was intense but the position of the sun changes so quickly at this time of year- we had to move fast every time we set up a new shot.

Here’s Cutsie. She’s a smart, well-trained 20 year old Paint mare. She stood like a pro for her photos- no halter, no bridle. Her right eye is part brown, part blue:

And she can RUN!

Go, Cutsie, Go!

Here’s the handsome 6YO QH named Jet. He was so nice to work with until we turned him loose for his liberty photos… then he was jet-propelled!

See Jet run!

Jet at sunset- I’ve been practicing my silhouettes quite a bit lately and the big horizon at the farm was perfect for sunset silhouettes.

Flying Mane

And this is Angel- she is really sweet and very bonded to her owner. She has the cutest blonde eyelashes and a really cool blaze.

Next weekend, I’ll be at the Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase. A few days later, I’ll be on my way to California for the Breeders’ Cup!

A Big Thank You to Fugly Horse of the Day!

October 11, 2008

Why the long face?

Much love for Fugs! What a surprise it was to see Alibar’s handsome face on my favorite blog. Cheers to Fugly Horse of the Day for the support and kind words in her post about Alibar on October 10, 2008.

I’m dedicated long-time reader of the blog. FHOTD is known for its enthusiastic audience and the author’s strong ideas; she champions many important issues in the equine industry and brings brutally honest comments about modern horse breeding practices to a very large audience. There are regular features about equine rescues and the people who are working their hardest to make a real difference in the problems we see in the world of horse ownership.

The same group of readers who can spot a “nest” a mile away bombarded my inbox with some of the most heartfelt and touching stories I’ve ever read. A month after saying goodbye to Alibar, I spent an entire day in tears- tears of wonder at the universal experience of saying goodbye to a special horse. Some readers lost their beloved horses decades ago and told me how they could still feel the pain like it happened a day ago. Some readers have young horses but felt the sting of reality that some day their wide-eyed greenbeans will be old men. Some people are getting ready to euthanize their old or ill horses and told me how my words gave them the confidence to be there for their horses until the very end.

No matter the discipline, the breed, the geographic location, we all must care for our equine friends from birth to death. Horse owners of every walk of life have long been doing what I did for Alibar: soaking hay cubes, researching senior feeds, hunting down skilled farriers, speaking with vets, and exercising our senior horses. Alibar was my first horse- from 1989 to 2008, I took care of his every need. My hard work paid off- Alibar was full of energy and serviceably sound until he became sick this summer. We had issues to manage, like navicular syndrome and poor teeth, but we made lifestyle changes- we went from jumpers to dressage and from hay to soaked hay cubes. We were still occasionally jumping small fences and competing in dressage shows until only a few months ago. I never stopped learning from Alibar- he was even more fun to ride in his late 20s than he was in his physical prime.

My heartfelt thanks to every single person for every single email and blog comment that I have received since Alibar’s death. It makes me beam with pride that my little spotless Appaloosa touched the lives of so many respected horse owners. All of the photos, books, and proud bragging in the world cannot do Alibar justice- there will never be another one like him.

Spotlight: A Perfect Pony- Diamonds Please, aka “Mallie”

October 10, 2008

Sky and Mallie

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Sky and her pony Mal. Mallie is a 16 year old Arab-type pony. She and Sky compete in hunter/jumper shows and are avid trail riders.

Mallie has a great story: Sky’s mom owned Mallie when she was a young horse but she had to sell her. Many years later, she found Mal again and bought her for her daughter.

Sky’s mom kept Mallie’s ownership a secret for a few weeks- she was boarded at her riding stable and Sky thought that she was a lesson horse. On Christmas morning, Sky unwrapped a framed photo of her and Mallie which had a message embossed on the frame telling her that Mallie is her very own pony.

Sky and Mallie

Mallie is all mare and all pony- Sky is learning a lot from her. She’s becoming a wonderful rider in the process.

I was only a year or two older when I met Alibar. It is a joy to see a budding relationship in the wake of losing my first horse.

Say Hello, Gracie…

October 8, 2008

Gracie

Meet Gracie, the Corgi mix puppy. She was born in Georgia and ended up in a high-kill shelter. She was brought into New Jersey and kept in foster care until she was adopted by a loving family. Best wishes to Gracie and her family for a lifetime of happiness.

Gettysburg Rocked…

October 8, 2008

My husband and I drove to Gettysburg for a weekend anniversary getaway. The drive was really pretty and it took about 3.5 hours. Rocked out to some homemade mix CDs on the way out.

We arrived in town in the early afternoon and stopped at the visitor’s center. Then we set up a bus tour and saw the battlefield atop a double-decker bus. From the bus, I could see the tippy-tops of the monuments and statues. This is Gen’l George Meade and his famous horse, Baldy (later called Old Baldy). This horse was tough as NAILS- he was wounded 14 times.

General George G. Meade and Old Baldy

I strongly dislike shooting landscapes, but it’s a lot more fun shooting them from the top of a moving bus. Composition and exposure on the fly ;^)

Gettysburg Tracks

After our bus tour, we walked around town and got dinner at O’Rorke’s. Then we drove back to the park in our car. Since we already did the first tour, we were sort of familiar with the layout and got to take our time looking around, but the park is very large and we still got lost and wandered around a lot. I’m the kind of person who enjoys getting lost, and you could not get *really* lost out there without ending up on a main road.

I got some pretty photos at sunset- I’m obsessed with silhouettes these days. It’s a zillion times easier when the horses don’t move. This is the General Oliver Howard Monument. From what I’ve read, this statue was sculpted later than many of the other equestrian statues in the park. It has a more rounded and modern form to it, as evidenced by the exteme flexion of the horse’s neck.

General Henry Slocum. There’s also an equestrian statue of Slocum at Prospect Park in New York. Henry Warner Slocum (September 24, 1827 – April 14, 1894), was a Union general during the American Civil War and later served in the United States House of Representatives from New York. During the war, he was one of the youngest major generals in the Army and fought numerous major battles in the Eastern Theater and in Georgia and the Carolinas.

I could not find the name of his horse :^)

Same statue, different exposure…

Here’s the Pennsylvania State Monument and a little cavalry monument in the foreground…

And here’s my husband rocking the monument: “Hellooooo Gettysburg!”

Live at Gettysburg! One Night Only!

After our drive, we went on a ghost tour- it was fun to hear the old stories.

The next morning, we woke at dawn and went back to the battlefield for one more look. It was so nice to see it in the still of morning.

This is the Louisiana Monument, sculpted by Donald De Lue. Originally from Boston, De Lue lived his later years in Leonardo, NJ.

A female figure representing the spirit of the Confederacy floats above a fallen artilleryman, with the Confederate battle flag clutched to his heart. She blows a trumpet over his dead body, and her right arm is outstretched above her head. I set up the photo *just so* to get that little sparkle in the corner of the statue- no filters used.

I was photographing a larger monument when this little guy caught my eye. His head peeks out of a large stone monument.

Wizard Needs his Back Cracked

October 5, 2008

Wizard- my Equine Therapist

I noticed that Wizard has begun to pin his ears when I put a saddle on him. In the past few days, he has become more sensitive to me brushing his back- especially this past Friday. I’m going to schedule an appointment for the equine chiropractor so she can determine if he’s sore from getting back into work, the saddle, or an old issue. In the meantime, Wizard is getting spoiled with grazing, grooming, and going for walks.
